How to add a comment to every encrypted email message when using PGP Partitioned Encoding.
Although this feature states the comment is added to "secured messages", older PGP Partitioned Encoding must be used for this comment to appear when using secure messaging. This feature does not work with the newer\current PGP/MIME encoding that is typically used by default. The reason this feature works only with PGP Partitioned encoding is when a message body is encrypted, the text itself is encrypted and the output is a block of cipher text. Such as the sample below:
-----BEGIN PGP MESSAGE----- Version: PGP Desktop 10.2.0 (Build 2401) Comment: This is the comment! Charset: utf-8 qANQR1DBwEwDEB23DGilascBB/wL9YSi1PqyKol0tbi5JEsb7OZzEUHFHmOPaiLd RWa5fo9CNWpyloIX3pd9/DlYvLsyV747q/6RnqQg58BylhDTf42LEMTkb5KkZG4Q Ml69dH0x2Ou/AjGTJQuHfhx22qlJPZqF76ii/K/UlF11GDfN+KO+FDjLqmkxAw3F LpVXpAoYwJ0ojYLzL+2qYQjt7v1qTY0Up4NK8CVTsmXtbG4F65gERsxe2Z2zhM4S iUJXVskVgjiR2Oyv3KPw3Fe83M7sM6XCd57TZLZBK36GSK4DIFQoSCvrqJAHexkC 3AM9t8G91HH1ydTGiL20jRXtmvBQ1PAtzCYqMYtOafU3GQU80ksB9QGtQYoTMym8 oxQ/bXSRWg24WZmRsWdf8Yx1VmG0dt7TDW/Lpyc0w+bKlHmlgnb2EXHFXL+8oBEl vJuk6h7RvrTvW6AnngCs5PU= =gYIB -----END PGP MESSAGE-----
PGP Partitioned encoding will also encrypt attachments individually and attach those to emails.
When PGP/MIME encoding is used, the entire message, including its attachments, are encoded into one single message.pgp file. When the recipient receives the encrypted content and automatically decrypts the message, there should no longer be a need to see any special comments. The message body is displayed automatically in the email and the attachments are placed properly as a regular attachment.
To add a comment to an unmanaged Symantec Encryption Desktop (previously PGP Desktop) encrypted email message using PGP Partitioned encoding:
Right-click on Symantec Encryption Desktop icon in the Task bar and select Open Symantec Encryption Desktop.
Click on Tools > Options.
Select the Messaging tab.
Add your desired comment into the comment field box.
To add a comment to a managed Symantec Encryption Desktop client encrypted email message using PGP Partitioned encoding:
Log into the Symantec Encryption Management Server.
Select Consumers > Consumer Policy.
Select the Consumer Policy you want to add the comment to and then click Desktop > Messaging & Keys.
Put a checkmark in the box next to Add a comment to secured email.
Add the comment into the comment dialog box.
Click Save from bottom right corner.
This will update the client during the next Policy Update (for immediate update on the client right-click the Symantec Encryption Desktop icon from Task bar and select Update Policy).
Note: When enabled, the text you type here is always included in messages you encrypt or sign. Comments typed in this field appear below the --BEGIN PGP MESSAGE BLOCK-- text header and PGP Desktop version number of each secured message. These comments are not visible in decrypted emails.
Because this comment applies to cipher text Symantec Encryption Desktop creates, if using the "Current Window", or "Clipboard" functionality, this additional comment will also appear in this case.
For information on how to encrypt using the Current Window, or Clipboard functionality, please refer to HOWTO42131.
