You want to know whether there is a difference between the command smc -updateconfig and right-clicking the Symantec Endpoint Protection (SEP) client's system tray icon and clicking Update Policy.
Resolution
Both smc -updateconfig and Update Policy trigger a heartbeat from the SEP client to the SEP Manager. The commands are identical and accomplish the same thing.
