Issue/Introduction

The Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager (SEPM) has been used to export a managed Symantec Endpoint Protection (SEP) client installation package named setup.exe.

When running setup.exe on Windows 8 /10 , the following errors displayed: "The publisher could not be verified. Are you sure you want to run this software?" and "This file does not have a valid digital signature that verifies its publisher. You should only run software from publishers you trust."

Cause

SEP installation files which are exported from the SEPM are not signed.

Resolution

There are two solutions for this error:

1: Ignore the error
If setup.exe has not been modified or tampered with since being exported from the SEPM, this error may be safely ignored by clicking Run.

2: Sign setup.exe
This error will not occur if setup.exe is signed by a certificate which is signed by a trusted certificate authority.
