You are upgrading or cleanly installing a Macintosh client for Symantec Endpoint Protection (SEP) 12.1.2 or later. After you export the installation package and unzip the installer to prepare for installation, you notice that there are both the Symantec Endpoint Protection installer file and a folder named Additional Resources. What is the purpose of this folder?
If the Additional Resources folder is not present in the same location as the Symantec Endpoint Protection client for Mac installer file, the installation fails with an error message indicating files are missing, that it could not locate the Additional Resources folder package outside the .app file, or that the package is damaged.
A changed signing requirement from Apple necessitated the separate folder that accompanies the Symantec Endpoint Protection installer file.
For Symantec Endpoint Protection 12.1.2, the Additional Resources folder was included only for managed clients, and was necessary due to a change in the digital signing requirements of installation files for the default setting in Gatekeeper, which was introduced in Mac OS X 10.7.5 and 10.8. For installing to earlier versions of Mac OS X, the customized data for a managed installation could be included within the Symantec Endpoint Protection client for Mac installer .pkg. The customized data include client policies, license files, Sylink communication files, and so on. However, Gatekeeper's default settings require at minimum digitally signed installer packages. Modifying the standard unmanaged package with customized settings invalidated the digital signing required by Gatekeeper.
The Symantec Endpoint Protection 12.1.4 client for Mac moved to a single application for installation. However, for Symantec Endpoint Protection 12.1.5, additional changes to the signing requirements for Mac OS X 10.9.5 and later necessitated that both managed and unmanaged clients use the Additional Resources folder with the the Symantec Endpoint Protection client for Mac installer .app.
To ensure a successful installation, the Additional Resources folder must be present in the same location as the Symantec Endpoint Protection client for Mac installer file. If you copy the installer file to another location, you must also copy Additional Resources; otherwise, the installation fails.
