Found Patch Management is not targeting clients with older 3rd Party Software installed in Compliance Reports.
Last Updated August 12, 2015
Found older software updates for 3rd Party Vendors (i.e. Java and Adobe) are no longer present in Patch Management Compliance Reports.
Found the older Software Update Advertisements are disabled on the Software Update Policy > Advanced Tab.
Patch Management targets for only the newest Software Updates as designed by the vendor. This is working as designed, for the majority of the customer base wants to upgrade to major versions when available. In addition; Patch Management disables older 3rd Party software update advertisements when the 'Disable Superseded Updates' is enabled on the PMImport for Windows.
Work through the following to resolve this issue:
Once the version of the 3rd Party Software is available for testing in the PRC: Disable the selection for the specific vendor in the Vendors and Software settings on the Import Patch Data for Windows (PMImport) policy.
May also stop the PMImport schedule from running completely; the new imported data is what changes the rule logic from Applicable to Superseded and that is when the newer Software Update will target IsApplicable=TRUE.
Disable the setting 'Disable Superseded Updates' on the PMImport for Windows.
Note: This will cause the PMImport to run a short while longer as it checks the update advertisement integrity during the Revise Software Updates Task and will save time in the long run from having to re-enable advertisements on all affected Software Update Policies > Advanced Tab.
Ensure that each Software Update Policy targets the clients to receive the specific version required.
Create separate filters that house the clients with the older software version installed and separate them accordingly to the individual Software Update Policy targeting.
Advisory: The reporting will not function for older superseded versions. An enhancement request has been pushed to the Patch Management Dev Team to review and allow older superseded versions, that fit this criteria, to be present in reports. Keep in mind that Patch Management does not report on Superseded Updates; especially Microsoft, for they are deemed outmoded and unnecessary.
