Unknown error 80004005 when attempting to deploy changes to the 'Auto-Protect' settings in Symantec Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange

When attempting to deploy changes to the Symantec Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange (SMSMSE) Auto-Protect Settings, the SMSMSE console displays a pop-up error "Unknown error 80004005". Changes appear to deploy successfully despite the error.
UAC is preventing the logged in user from accessing the contents of the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\MSExchangeIS\VirusScan\TransportExclusion registry key.

When launching the SMSMSE console, right click and Select "Run as administrator"
Open the registry editor and navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\MSExchangeIS\VirusScan.
Right click the VirusScan key and select Permissions.
Add "Full control" to the Authenticated users group.
Server 2008 or greater with User Account Control (UAC) enabled.
