The Symantec Mobile Security 7.2 (SMS 7.2) client is installed on an Android or Windows Mobile device. How can it be verified that the anti-malware features are functioning correctly?
The best method to check if Anti-Malware is functioning correctly is to use the Eicar test file. Eicar.com contains harmless code designed to test the integrity of antivirus software. You can download and use the Eicar test file at the EICAR Web site.
Windows Mobile clients
Download the Eicar test file using the browser of the Windows Mobile PDA or smartphone, or copy it from a network source or the SD Card. Auto-Protect scans, as well as manual and scheduled scans, should detect this test file.
A scan of an Android device should detect eicar.com test files just as it does on a Windows Mobile device. There are also a number of free apps available in the Google Play store which provide this test file in an Android-specific .apk format. Symantec is not affiliated with any of these particular vendors and cannot make any specific recommendations as to which test app to use, but SMS 7.2 should detect the payload delivered by any of them.
On Android, it is also possible for administrators to create a custom detection for any application. To confirm that SMS 7.2 is functioning correctly, admins may wish to create a test detection for any common non-essential app of their choosing. Once the App Control Policy is configured in the SMP and the Android client has this latest policy, a scan of the Android device should detect the desired test application. For more information, see Best Practice for Configuring App Control Policy in Symantec Mobile Security 7.2.
