Symantec Endpoint Protection client Auto-Upgrade fails when the Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager 11 is installed on Windows XP SP3
Last Updated July 17, 2013
When the Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager version 11 is installed on Windows XP SP3, Symantec Endpoint Protection clients are not able to be auto-upgraded.
In IIS 5.x, the installation of the Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager does not configure the Secars component to accept HTTP HEAD method requests by default. The HEAD method is required for Auto-Upgrade to succeed.
To resolve this issue, it is necessary to configure IIS to allow HTTP HEAD requests for Secars.
Click Start > Control Panel
If the Control Panel is in Category View, click Switch to Classic View in the top left
Double-click Administrative Tools > Internet Information Services
Expand the local computer > Web Sites > Symantec Web Server
Right-click secars and click Properties
On the Virtual Directory tab click Configuration
On the Mappings tab there will be a single Application Mapping for the extension "*" (no quotes). Select it and click Edit.
Underneath Verbs next to Limit to, append the string: ,HEAD
You will now have the following text in Limit to: GET,POST,HEAD
Click OK > OK > OK
It is not necessary to restart IIS after making this change.
