Symantec Monitor Agent is causing very high CPU usage
Last Updated April 29, 2019
The Monitor Agent is using an excessive amount of CPU resources. This issue can be identified by closely examining the aexmetricprov.exe process in the Task Manager. To access the task manager right click the Task Bar at the bottom of your desktop and select Task Manager. Now click the processes tab and examine the percentage of CPU usage that the aexmetricprov.exe process is consuming.
There is no associated error message. The common symptoms of this issue include: sluggish system behaviour, noticeable high CPU consumption, or System freezes or Blue Screen of Death.
This is caused by certain policies being enabled for Monitor Solution. The particular policies are: System Health and Tuning, Processor, and Windows Server Performance. The root cause of this problem stems from a function in the monitor code that would check for the existence of a metric for each performance counter read.
This has been fixed in a new version of the Monitor Agent. This fix is available through Symantec Tech Support.
SMP 7.1 Windows computers. This effects all supported windows platforms: Windows XP - Windows 2008R2.
