The Altiris Agent sends many different Notification Server Events (NSEs) to the NS for various reasons. The majority are generated by the installed solution agents, such as Software Management Solution Agent.
The few events that the core Altiris Agent generates are, basic inventory, logon events, log off events, crash detection events and network connection switching events
Details about Altiris Agent (Symantec Management Agent).
1 - Basic Inventory
Once basic inventory is processed by the NS it can be viewed per computer via 'Resource Manager > View > Inventory > Data Classes > Inventory > Basic Inventory
The database table name for each basic inventory data class is displayed within the Status tab > Database Information section. The information collected by basic inventory is referenced by many areas of functionality within the SMP platform. Below is an outline of some common areas of use for each data class:
Inv_AeX_AC_Client_Agent - Reports 'Agent Version', 'Computers with no additional plugins' and 'All Windows 2000/XP/2003/Vista/2008/7 Computers with no Agent'. Additionally all 'Requiring Upgrade' filters or resource targets.
Inv_AeX_AC_Client_Agent_Summary - Hierarchy related report - 'Symantec Management Agent Summary'
Inv_AeX_AC_Identification - All Operating System specific Filters, i.e. 'All Windows Vista'. All System type filters i.e. 'Windows x64' 'Windows x86'
Inv_AeX_AC_InternetGateway - Report 'Computers by Gateway' and 'Count of Computers by Gateway'
Inv_AeX_AC_Network_Zone - Report 'IFM Agents not in an Internet Site' . Filter 'All Computers currently on the Internet'
Inv_AeX_AC_Primary_User - Used to create the information for data class Inv_AeX_AC_Machine_Usage. Also used by Asset Management solution.
Inv_AeX_AC_Roles - All Filters at the following location Filters > Computer Filters > Windows > Servers > Roles
Inv_AeX_AC_TCPIP - Used to populate the subnets within the Site Server Settings page. Also used in the console where ever a client IP address is referenced.
Inv_AeX_AC_VirtualMachine - Populates the 'Resource Type' column within Filters
2 - Basic Inventory > AeX AC Client Connectivity
This basic inventory data class calculates the time connected to the LAN, WAN or when the agent is disconnected from the network 'None'. Similar to primary user it enters the duration that the agent is in a particular connection state and updates the following xml file - C:\Program Files\Altiris\Altiris Agent\AeXConnectionMonitorLog.xml
When basic inventory is generated it obtains the latest information from this xml file and includes the information in the basic inventory NSE.
3 - Software Delivery and Package Delivery Events sent by the Agent
SWD Status Events
New job - A new Software Delivery task arrives. This is sent when the Altiris Agent first notices the task in the Client policy File..
Job updated - Sent when the Altiris Agent notices changes to a Software Delivery task, i.e. the policy has been modified on the NS.
Job removed - Sent when the Software Delivery task no longer applies to the Altiris Agent - Example: the task is disabled or the Altiris Agent is removed from the target which applies to the task.
job activated - Sent when the task is enabled on the Altiris Agent. This is the opposite of job removed. Sent when the task is enabled on the Altiris Agent. This event will only be sent if the task has previously been set as disabled.
Package Status Events
New package - Sent when a new package is first received in the configuration XML file
Download complete - Sent when a package download has completed.
Package updated - Sent when a package is downloaded because the files have changed or been deleted.
Package to be removed - Sent when no active Software Delivery tasks reference a package anymore and the package is no longer in use on the Altiris Agent.
Package removed - Sent after the package is finally deleted.
Package download blocked - Sent because a blockout is preventing the download of a package
Insufficient disk space to download package - Sent when there is not enough disk space to download a package.
Unable to check package – Send when a communication error occurs when attempting to download a package
Database table on the Server - Evt_AeX_SWD_Status
Package Download Status Events
Start – Initial Sent when a package download begins after the download actually starts.
End – Complete Sent when a package download has finished if any data was downloaded successfully.
Start - Refresh Sent when a package has already downloaded once before and has either changed or is being re-downloaded.
End download events can have many different error 'status' returns. Depending on the error returned to the agent at the time of the download failure.
End - Status > HTTP error: 404 Not Found
End - Status >Communications blockout in effect
End - Status > Package files do not match the package snapshot. Unspecified error.
Note: Failed download events are only sent once. If the Altiris Agent gets an error downloading a package, it sends an end download event to the Notification Server. The Altiris Agent will then go into retry mode for the package, however if the same error is received on further retry attempts it will not send another failed download event.

Policy Execution Events
SWD Execution Event - Sent when a Software Delivery policy is run.

4 - AeXAgentUtil.exe tool:
The AeXAgentUtil.exe can be found at the following location on agent machines (default install location ) - C:\Program Files\Altiris\Altiris Agent
To view all available parameters run AeXAgentUtil.exe /?
External reference information on the tool are located on pages 29-31 of the Notification Server Reference Guide (link at top of document)
5 - Altiris Agent communication via Proxy:
The supported proxy server is Microsoft ISA. It is supported in anonymous and authenticated modes.
The proxy server IP address and port are entered into Internet Explorer on the Agent machines.
> Go to Internet Explorer > Tools > Internet Option - Connections tab >LAN Settings button > Proxy server section
The Agent machine picks these settings out of IE during a Symantec Management Agent service restart or when starting the download for a package.
It stores them at the following location in the registry:
Proxy Settings within IE can be set per user, however the Agent will only store one proxy server settings in the registry at a time. It will switch between the configured proxy settings depending on which user is logged on at the time, overwriting the previous settings.
The below registry key 'Proxy Auto Detect' set to '1' by default will cause the Agent to pull the Proxy Settings out of IE when required. If this key is set to a value of '0' it will not pull the settings from IE at all.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Altiris\Communications\Proxy Auto Detect
The below registry key 'Proxy Last Resort' set to '1' by default will cause the agent to first attempt any communications via direct connection method rather than via proxy. If direct communications fail it will fall back to use the configured proxy settings. If this key is set to a value of '0' the Agent will not attempt to communicate directly but rather will always use the configured proxy settings.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Altiris\Communications\Proxy Last Resort
