Potential Workaround for non admin users to launch pcAnywhere remote from the NS console
Last Updated November 26, 2013
When using Altiris Console from a client machine with non Administrator privileges, the Altiris console requires the install of pcARemoteControlX.ocx but will not install even though pcAnywhere Solution full version is already installed on the machine
When trying to run a remote control to a computer through the Symantec Management console a browser prompts with the message but fails to install;
"This website wants to install the following add-on: 'pcARemoteControlX.ocx' from 'Symantec Corporation'. if you trust the website and the add-on and want to install it, click here..
The logged in user does not have administrator rights or installation of browser objects has been restricted by GPO.
Install through the browser with Administrator privileges (recommended method) or install and register manually;
To install and Register the pcaRemoteControlx.ocx manually:
1. From the Client machine that is using the remote console, Run CMD as Administrator and run the following command;
copy \\SMPServer\Notification Server directory\pca\web\pcaRemoteControlx.ocx "c:\windows\Downloaded Program Files"
2. Make sure you are out of the Altiris Console in your browser, open an Administrative Command Prompt and run the command:
regsvr32 "c:\windows\Downloaded Program Files\pcaRemoteControlx.ocx" /s
By default the install location for pcaRemoteControlX.ocx after it is registered through browser is c:\windows\Downloaded Program files so the suggested method is to use the same location when installing manually.
After install, If you are getting internet Explorer Security popup with the message;
"A website wants to open web content using this program on your computer
allow or don't allow"
You can add the Altiris server to trusted sites by going to Tools> internet Options> Security>Trusted Sites and add your SMP\Altiris Server to the Trusted Websites.
