Activating an external keyboard with Microsoft Surface Pro 2 after encryption
Last Updated February 14, 2014
After encrypting a disk on a Microsoft Surface Pro 2 system running Microsoft Windows 8/8.1 booting in UEFI mode, the Touch Cover or Type Cover keyboard becomes inactive upon reboot or after hibernation.
Similar issues were observed on the Surface Pro 1 and have been fixed using Symantec Drive Encryption 10.3.2 and above. Surface Pro 2 systems still have this known issue and is currently being reviewed by Symantec Development to be fixed in a future release.
Connect the keyboard properly with Surface Pro before you turn on your system and before you perform the following procedures:
To activate the Touch Cover or Type Cover keyboard at reboot
Press and hold the power button (present on the top-right edge of Surface Pro 2), and then press the volume down button (present along the left edge of Surface Pro 2) simultaneously.
To activate the Touch Cover or Type Cover keyboard after Windows hibernation
Press and hold the power button to turn off Surface Pro 2.
Press and hold the power button, and then press the volume down button (present along the left edge of Surface Pro 2) simultaneously.
