When attempting to manually start the Vontu services, you receive the following error message:
Error 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely manner.
The DLP logs provide little or no information to assist in troubleshooting the error.
This is a very generic Windows error and may have multiple root-causes, though the solution below has been confirmed to resolve the issue on systems that have been "hardened".
Solution 1: Add/change the TMP and TEMP user environment variables for the local users "protect" and "protect_updates" to point to "%USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Temp".
