The Known Issues section of the Release Notes for Symantec Endpoint Encryption 11.1 states the following:
If Removable Media Encryption is installed on a virtual client, the installation of Drive Encryption is not supported.
This also applies if Symantec Encryption Desktop is installed on a virtual machine that has Symantec Endpoint Encryption Removable Media Encryption 11.1 installed. In this scenario, Symantec Encryption Desktop drive encryption is not supported. This applies only to virtual machines, not physical machines.
In some cases, Symantec Drive Encryption 10.3.2 may appear to succeed but the virtual machine will fail to reboot. In other cases, when Symantec Drive Encryption is attempted, the following message may be displayed:
Unable to start encryption: file operation error (-11991)
The following message is logged in the PGPlog.txt file:
10:50:49 Drive Encryption Error Instrument Failed: Unable to commit C:\ VMware Virtual disk SCSI Disk Device (0)
Before testing Symantec Endpoint Encryption Removable Media Encryption 11.1 with Symantec Drive Encryption on a virtual machine, first install Symantec Drive Encryption and encrypt the drive. Once the drive has been encrypted, Symantec Endpoint Encryption Removable Media Encryption 11.1 can be installed and tested.
