Issue/Introduction

Incorrect certificate being displayed when accessing Symantec Email Quarantine portal when using unsupported browsers.

The security connection could not be verified

There was a problem establishing a secure connection

Environment

Email Security.cloud

Mobile:

BlackBerry OS 7.1 or earlier
Windows Mobile 6 or ealier
Android default browser on Android 2.x (Fixed in Honeycomb for tablets and Ice Cream Sandwich for phones)
Nokia Browser for Symbian at least on Series60
Opera Mobile for Symbian at least on Series60

Cause

This is due to the browser’s lack of SNI (Server Name Indication) support.

What is SNI?
For more information about SNI, please visit https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Server_Name_Indication.

Fortunately, almost all modern operating systems and web browsers support SNI.  However, there are a few notable exceptions of browsers that do not support SNI, which were previously listed above under the Environment section in this article.

Resolution

We recommend to upgrade the legacy browser/software to the latest version to access Symantec Email Quarantine or any other HTTPS site that utilizes SNI. This will also increase the security of web browsing as it will stop attackers from eavesdropping on the site being requested.
