EDPA and WDP services are not starting right after a major upgrade of DLP Endpoint agent
Last Updated September 16, 2016
After getting the DLP Endpoint Agent upgraded from version 12.0 to 12.5, the EDPA and WDP services are not starting. The manual start just brings the services up for few seconds.
Microsoft Windows 7, 8 and 10.
You will notice something similar to below mentioned side by side error in the Application section of an Event Viewer:
Activation context generation failed for "C:\Program Files\Manufacturer\Endpoint Agent\Verity\kvfilter.dll". Dependent Assembly Microsoft.VC80.CRT, processorArchitecture="amd64",publicKeyToken="1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b",type="win32",version="8.0.50727.6195" could not be found. Please use sxstrace.exe for detailed diagnosis.
As described in https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/905238, when a major software upgrade is done, assembly in the global assembly cache or SxS will be missing and causes a failure of EDPA and WDP services.
Download vcredist_x86.EXE and vcredist_x64.EXE from https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?displaylang=en&id=26347
Install them on the affected machine
Open an elevated command prompt and run sc start edpa && sc start wdp command
Reboot the machine
The services will be up and running
