Below are considerations before upgrading to an MP release in DLP
MP releases only contain defect fixes, the exact list being provided in this Release Notes document, broken down by DLP major components. MP releases do not include any ‘undocumented’ or ‘hidden’ technical changes.
MP releases never contain new features. They do not contain database schema changes either. They can contain a few lightweight, non-risky database changes that are required for certain fixes (for example: PL/SQL updated code, Oracle sequence redefinitions, etc…)
The primary goal of a MP release is to shore up your DLP system with all fixes available for already known important issues present in the base release it is applicable to, with no risk of product regression.
Proactively installing MP releases ensures that your system will not experience these already known, fixed issues, providing maximum system uptime and stability, while reducing the system TCO.
Installing and deploying a new MP release to your Enforce server and detection servers is a streamlined process that usually takes minutes.
MP Releases go through a complete regression cycle before being shipped. For all the reasons listed here, Symantec recommends that customers – if they even wish to do so - spend a minimal amount of time testing or qualifying new MP releases in their lab/test environment before upgrading their production systems (unlike major/minor releases that brings new features, changes in behavior, new or updated system requirements, and for which a more thorough qualification may be warranted before moving to production).
Symantec DLP follows an industry-standard cumulative approach to fixes and hotfixes. Once a MP release is officially available for a given major or minor ‘base’ release, all subsequent MP releases – if any become available - provide a superset of that MP release. Hotfixes – when provided - are always built upon the latest MP release applicable to a given base release at that time. Keeping your DLP system base release up-to-date with the latest MP release installed, ensures that Symantec will be in a position to provide optimal engineering support and hotfixes, in the most time-effective manner, should you ever encounter that need.
As a corollary of the aforementioned point, and in order to provide maximum value, quality and predictability to its customers, Symantec DLP does not “backport” newly developed fixes to make them available on top of a base release or an older MP release when a newer MP is already available. Should you need to apply such a hotfix under these circumstances, you will be required to upgrade to the latest MP release available (if not already done). The next MP release – if one becomes available – usually includes the hotfix that now becomes an official fix, being part of that newer MP release.
