I followed the password recovery instructions in PacketGuide. However, the "touchpwd=" method of password recovery does not work.
There is a 30-second time limit for entering the string touchpwd=. Some configurations may be so large and take such a long time to load on startup that the time limit may be reached before the string can be entered. This problem can be worked around by entering Safe Mode. (Configurations aren't loaded in Safe Mode.)
To recover the password in Safe Mode:
Connect the null-modem cable (included with your unit) from the unit's CONSOLE port to the serial port on your PC or workstation.
Open a terminal emulation program (such as HyperTerminal).
Verify that you have configured the program with the following values to communicate with the unit's CONSOLE serial port:
9600 bps, 8 data bits, 1 stop bit, no parity, hardware flow control
If you are using a modem connected to the serial port, the modem must be set to: 9600 bps, 8 data bits, 1 stop bit, no parity, auto-answer (usually ATS0=1 in the standard Hayes command set), and DTR always on (usually the command AT&D0 or a DIP-switch setting). Check the modem manual for details.
Power cycle the Packeteer unit. If your unit doesn't have a power switch, unplug the power cord and then plug it back in.
Wait for the terminal screen to display Loading..., then press the Ctrl+A keys simultaneously. If successful, the screen will display
At the password prompt, enter
touchpwd= to reset the password.
You will then be prompted for a new password.
Enter a new password.
To exit Safe Mode, reset PacketShaper and allow it to boot normally.
