Issue/Introduction

Allocating and prioritizing bandwidth for a particular type of traffic is a two-step process. First, you use the Management Console to create a bandwidth management class; you assign a name as well as allocate and prioritize bandwidth for the class. Next, you use policy to define the traffic associated with the class. For example, you can create policy that describes the protocol associated with the class. After you have installed this policy, traffic with that protocol will be guaranteed the minimum bandwidth or restricted to the maximum bandwidth defined in the class, according to the configured priority.

These high-level steps provide instructions on creating policy in the Visual Policy Manager (VPM). For a basic introduction to creating policy, see the training video:

Basic ProxySG Policy Management

Resolution

To manage bandwidth for a protocol:

  1. In the Management Console, define each bandwidth management class (Configuration > Bandwidth Mgmt. > BWM Classes) and specify the minimum, maximum, and/or priority for the class.
  2. Launch the Visual Policy Manager.
  3. Create a Web Access layer (Policy > Add Web Access Layer ).
  4. (Optional) Specify the Source for the traffic (such as a particular subnet).
  5. Select the protocol to be associated with the bandwidth class:
    • Right-click in the Service column and choose Set.
    • Select New > Client Protocol.
    • Select the protocol and click OK.
    • With the protocol object selected, click Add.
    • Close the dialogs.
  6. Select the bandwidth class:
    • Right-click in the Action column and choose Set.
    • Select Manage Bandwidth.
    • Name the bandwidth management object.
Tip: Give the object the same name as the class.
    • Select the side (Client side or Server side) and direction (Inbound or Outbound) that you want to manage.
Client Inbound—Traffic flowing into the ProxySG from a client (the entity sending a request, such as a client at a remote office linked to the appliance).
Server Outbound—Traffic flowing out of the ProxySG to a server.
Server Inbound—Traffic flowing back into the appliance from a server (the entity responding to the request).
Client Outbound—Traffic flowing back out of the appliance to a client.
    • From the Bandwidth class drop-down, select the class name.
    • Close the dialogs.
  7. Install the policy.
