If you try to stop the Altiris Services, you receive an error message from the Service control manager saying that the service could not stop.

Environment

ITMS 7.x, 8.x

Cause

The cause of this issue is currently unknown.

Resolution

A simple reboot of the Notification Server should fix the issue.

If reboot does not fix the issue, try to check C:\ProgramData\Symantec\SMP\EventQueue location and try to process the pilled-up files under EvtQFast. See "How to troubleshoot NSE processing issues"

Note: Sometimes the issue can be related to multiple Scheduled Tasks (Start>Control Panel>Scheduled Tasks) running at the same time, causing the Notification Server to use most of the resources on these tasks. Make sure that you don't make too many Scheduled Tasks running at the same time or overlapping each other. If this is the case, make sure that you change the run schedule in some of them.
