Remotely deploying the Cloud version of Endpoint Protection Small Business Edition
Last Updated March 28, 2019
The Push Deployment Wizard can be used as a standalone application to deploy client software by pushing the client software to remote computers and automatically installing it. This capability extends beyond the on-premises product and may be leveraged for large deployments of Symantec Endpoint Protection (SEP) SBE Cloud.
Note: You would need Administrator rights / privileges to the Windows domain to which the client computers belong, or to the computers themselves, if they are in workgroups.
There are two main components involved in the process necessary to install SEP SBE Cloud using the tool:
Redistributable package: Can be downloaded from the "Add Computers" button on the "Computers" tab.
Push Deployment Wizard: Can be downloaded from TECH195705.
Once these components have been downloaded the following process will produce a folder with a single SymRedistributable.exe file which will install the SBE Cloud client, and if needed, uninstall a prior installation of the same.
Creating the Package:
Preparing the Redistributable Package
Double click SymantecPackageCreator.exe
If prompted by User Account Control, click "Run."
Choose a destination folder for the installation files by clicking the "Browse" button.
Click Operating Systems... and deselect any OS not required for this deployment to limit the package size.
Enter any necessary proxy information by clicking the "Proxy Settings" button (this step is only required if there is a proxy in the environment).
Click Begin. This will download and build the installation files in the folder designated in step 3.
Deploying the Redistributable Package
The contents of the package can be manually copied and executed on a machine by running SymRedistributable.exe however it is also possible to use the "Push Deployment Wizard" to distribute the package over a network remotely. In order to use this tool, file sharing and network discovery must be enabled on the target machines.
Caution: If the -refreshall switch is used this process will cause a reboot without prompting on all machines which receive the deployment.
To perform push deployment:
Extract PushDeploymentWizard.zip which is downloaded from TECH195705 as mentioned above.
Navigate to the "PushDeploymentWizard" folder.
Run ClientRemote.exe. (This may trigger a UAC prompt. Click "Run", as before.)
Click Deploy self-installing executable.
Click "Browse" and select SymRedistributable.exe from the folder in which it was created.
Use one of these Command line options:
For a clean install enter the following, including quotes: " -silent"
For an upgrade or to repair an existing install enter the following, including quotes: " -silent -refreshall"
The next window directs the administrator to designate which computers to deploy to. There are two options:
Browse the network via the "Microsoft Windows Network" tree view and select which computers to install, and click "Add".
Click on the "Add or Import Computer" button to add computers by IP Address or Host Name.
A text file with one machine name or IP per line may also be used for rapid selection.
Click "Add", then click OK, if you followed option B.
Once computers are added the tool may prompt for administrative credentials if the current user's credentials fail to meet deployment requirements. It is best to use Domain Administrator credentials if available.
After all machines have been added to the "Computers to deploy to" column, click Finish.
The tool will engage and progress of the rollout will be displayed, when finished the clients should all be distributed.
Note: The "Complete" status indicates that the package was copied and the installation process started successfully. It does not indicate whether or not the install completed successfully.
Upon completion of the deployment process the tool will ask if you would like to view the deployment log. This is useful if you deployed to more than a few computers and need to see if the packages were copied successfully.
Install progress may be observed on a client by opening the task manager on the remote machine and looking for: SymRedistributable.exe, SymantecLauncher.exe, and MsiExec.exe.
The main client deployment and installation logs are: C:\Windows\Temp\vpremote.log, C:\ProgramData\Symantec.cloud\syminstall\SymRedistributable.log, and C:\ProgramData\Symantec.cloud\syminstall\SymantecLauncher.log.
