Issue/Introduction

While building a bootable USB thumb drive within the Boot Disk Creator you receive the following error:

The directory is not empty

Environment

Ghost Solution Suite 3.x

WinPE 10 release 1511

Cause

So this message is not necessarily an error. This message does not mean there is a problem with the Boot Disk Creator.  It is a message generated by Microsoft and revolves around which build of WinPE 10 that is being used.

Resolution

This issue occurs while using WinPE 10 build 1511.  If you remove WinPE 10 build 1511 from our product and then add WinPE 10 build 1703 or higher this message will go away.

To add a new build of WinPE 10 to Ghost Solution Suite you must first remove the previous installation of the Microsoft ADK.  This can be done through Add Remove Programs.  Remove the Windows Assessment and Deployment Kit - Windows 10.  You will then need to download and install build 1703 or newer from Microsoft.

How To remove WinPE 10 - Ghost Solution Suite:

  1. Make sure Boot Disk Creator is closed
  2. Open a file browser
  3. Browse to C:\Program Files (x86)\Altiris\eXpress\Deployment Server\Bootwiz\platforms\
  4. Locate the WINPE10 folder
  5. Rename this folder to WINPE10old
  6. Open the Boot Disk Creator
  7. Click on Tools
  8. Click on Install Pre-Boot Operating Systems
  9. Choose WinPE 10.0 X86 or X64
  10. Click on Browse
  11. The default location of the needed files is C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Kits
  12. Click Okay and then Click Next

To remote WinPE10 from Ghost Standard Tools you need to browse to C:\Program Files (x86)\Symantec\Ghost\bootwiz\Platforms\ and then follow the steps above starting at Step 4.
