VIP Access for Desktop

Issue/Introduction

Error "1406 error writing to Software\Symantec" when trying to install or upgrade to VIP Access Desktop.

"ERROR 1406 KEY \software\symantec"

Environment

Occurs on Windows 7 or Windows 10 machines with Norton Security installed.

Cause

This error is caused by Norton Product Tamper Protection preventing VIP Access from writing certain registry keys to Symantec directories in the Windows Registry.

Resolution

This has been resolved in Norton Security LiveUpdate package version 22.11.0.41 or later. To download and install this update, run the LiveUpdate tool from within your Norton product. The latest product can also be downloaded from www.Norton.com.

The following steps are provided as an alternative only if LiveUpdate cannot be run or the latest build downloaded from Norton.com (not recommended):

Temporarily turn off the Norton Product Tamper Protection setting in Norton Security (settings), install or upgrade VIP Access for Windows to version 2.2.4.x, then re-enable Norton Product Tamper Protection.

If Norton Product Tamper Protection cannot be disabled during the upgrade, click Ignore to the errors during the upgrade. This will allow VIP desktop to finish installing, but you may experience graphical interface issues when running VIP Access. The credential ID and security code may be visible on a transparent background. If this occurs, follow the steps to disable Tamper Protection, then run the installer again without removing the previous version.

If you are performing a fresh install, the installation may not proceed. It may be necessary to open Norton Security with administrative privilege. To do this, right-mouse click on Norton Security, then choose Run as administrator...

This issue will be resolved in the next update of Norton security products. Existing Norton customers will receive this update through LiveUpdate.
