Issue/Introduction

SIM (Symantec Installation Manager) is taking a prolonged time to upgrade SMP (Symantec Management Platform)  and configured Solutions.

Environment

SMP 8.1,8.5

Cause

MSIexec.exe is taking longer than expected to run through .msi's. It is believed the msi caches need cleaning up.

Resolution

This issue has been reported to the Symantec Development team. Better handling of this type of scenario has been added to SIM 8.1.5811 and later.

It was added several registry settings (to be used by SIM) to restart MSI service during installation, to cleanup caches and speedup further MSI installations.

Registry settings:

  • MsiExecRestart - can be 0 or 1 - enables SIM to restart MSI service - default is 0(disable)
  • MsiExecRestartDelay - in milleseconds - indicates how much SIM should wait betweem MSI service restart - default 10000(10 sec)
  • MsiExecRestartStep - count of installed MSI after which SIM will restart MSI service - default 4

To just enable SIM to restart MSI service, it only needs to be added "MsiExecRestart" as DWORD with the value of "1" into HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Altiris\Aim
All other settings can be added only in case if default values are not suitable.

Registry settings can be applied during installation at any time, and will be used by SIM immediately.
