The command line Apple software update utility "softwareupdate --list" returns an error message and no list of updates.

Note: This can be caused by the computer not having internet access to Apple.com. With Mac, clients download the patches needed directly from Apple.

Run the "softwareupdate --list" command on the Mac computer to confirm that a proper list of updates is returned without errors.

Ensure you have access to Apple.com.
