Issue/Introduction

You are trying to upgrade Adobe Acrobat, but the installation fails with an error. Removing Symantec Endpoint Protection (SEP) fixes the issue.

Error 1406. Could not write value {GUID.EN_US} to key \SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar. Verify that you have sufficient access to that key, or contact your support personnel.

Cause

An Application Control policy is preventing the installation of toolbars. Because Adobe Acrobat installs a toolbar to Internet Explorer, this policy will block the toolbar and cause the entire installation to roll back.

Resolution

Edit or remove any policy that blocks changes to either of the following (you may need to reboot your machine afterward):

  • \REGISTRY\MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar
  • \REGISTRY\\MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar
  • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar
  • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar
