Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange

Issue/Introduction

After making changes to the LiveUpdate proxy configuration for Symantec Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange (SMSMSE) 7.9.0 and later, LiveUpdate is unable to complete successfully. Additionally, no lux.log is written to C:\Program Files\Symantec\SMSMSE\7.9\Server\definitions\AntiVirus\Logs as is normally expected when LiveUpdate is run.

If a Debugview log is collected per How to Obtain Debug Logs for Symantec Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange (SMSMSE) section A, the following error is observed when LiveUpdate is run:

[XXXX] SAVFMSELive(XXX)[XXX] XXXX-XX-XX XX:XX:XX XXXXms:
[XXXX] ..\..\..\src\Server\Savfmseeng\AVEngine.cpp(961) :
[XXXX]  --->After LU - Update status: 33, STATUS_UM_INVALID_ARGS

Cause

Some data from the HKLM\Software\Symantec\CMAF\7.9\Info registry hive is missing or corrupt.

Resolution

Remove and re-create the details in the HKLM\Software\Symantec\CMAF\7.9\Info registry hive.

  1. Open the registry editor and navigate to HKLM\Software\Symantec\CMAF\7.9\Info.
  2. Delete the contents of this hive, while leaving the Info hive intact. After deleting the details from the hive, the path should still exist, but will only have the entry "(Default)".
  3. Re-configure the proxy settings per "How to allow Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange 7.9.0 and later access to download virus definitions via a proxy server"
  4. Run LiveUpdate to update definitions to the latest.

After completing the above steps, the STATUS_UM_INVALID_ARGS should no longer occur, and LiveUpdate should complete barring some other error.
