In some cases, this can be caused by load issues on the network.
Conditions can occur where a scheduled task can become stuck in the run queue of agents and all new tasks will sit in the run queue waiting their turn to run.
Resolving load issues and verifying the communication blockout settings are correct resolved the issue.
If scheduled tasks become stuck in the run queue on the Altiris Agent computers then all new tasks will sit in the run queue waiting their turn to run. When this occurs, the Altiris Agent continues to communicate correctly with the Notification Server, and the problem is only the stuck scheduled task in the run queue. New tasks scheduled with a higher priority will jump past the stuck task and run correctly but all queued tasks will continue to wait their turn to run.
Some possible resolutions to this situation are:
If the stuck task is known then disabling it on the Notification Server will remove it from the Altiris Agent's run queue and all pending tasks will then run at their scheduled times. The downside of disabling the task is that it is now disabled for all computers. Re-enabling it will reassign it to the run queue and in most cases it will then process correctly.
If only a few computers are affected and they can be identified, then a reboot of the computer generally resolves the issue.
Note: One quick way to confirm which computers do not have the problem of a task stuck in the run queue is to send out a global task/package that does nothing but would allow us to discount all computers that reported back as having run this job.
Note: The difficult in providing a report is that package download event data is maintained at the Altiris Agent computer only and is not forwarded to the Notification Server until the download has completed successfully. For this reason, a definitive report cannot be written to quickly identify agent computers with failed package downloads. In some cases a report can be written or the following reports could be used to help assemble some information to identify generally what computers may be affected:
