KNOWN ISSUE: After AD Import, the Fully Qualified Domain Name (FQDN) in the Inv_AeX_AC_Location table is incomplete
Last Updated April 14, 2015
The Inv_AeX_AC_Location table has entries where just the domain is listed as FQDN (Fully Qualified Domain Name). If Basic Inventory runs on those computers, that entry is repopulated, and the correct FQDN is populated. However, when AD Import runs again, it goes back to the incomplete entry.
Some solutions, like Real-Time System Manager Solution 6.3, that have components that use FQDN are having some issues (see article 39487, "KNOWN ISSUE: The Real-Time tab sometimes connects to the first responding Domain Controller instead of targeted system").
The entries on the Inv_AeX_AC_Location table look like this for most computer resources:
_id _ResourceGuid Fully Qualified Domain Name Distinguished Name 5503 F3241A2D-6332-41A7-88AB-E6E4996D66F0 DESK.altiris.com CN=DESK,CN=Computers,DC=altiris,DC=com 3889 0A80F9AD-721E-4D2B-AB43-FFAC48A6B22C altiris.com CN=COMSP3,CN=COMPUTERS,DC=ALTIRIS,DC=COM
AD Connector code always tries to guess the FQDN. This is done by extracting all the directory elements from the distinguishedName that start with DC= for example CN=test,DC=altiris,DC=com would be altiris.com. Then AD connector tries to connect to the DC for this constructed domain name. If we are able to connect we then ask the domain controller for the domain name, it can be either FQDN or Shortname style. It appears that AD connector only supplies the domain name in the FQDN column by design, there is no code that prepends the machine name to the domain name.
This issue is scheduled to be fixed with Notification Server 7.0.
The workaround at this point is to modify the Default Column Mappings for the AD Import Rules.
Change the Fully Qualified Domain Name for the AeX AC Location data class to dNSHostName.
Changing the Column Mappings to use dNSHostname instead of FQDN is the recommended way of resolving this issue. Note that this approach does have a drawback which is if AD does not have a dNSHostName attribute set for a computer resource, the Fully Qualified Domain Name column will be set to an empty string.
