KNOWN ISSUE: Replicated Software Update Policies not ready for distribution from Child Servers – associated bulletin not completely staged
Last Updated March 13, 2009
After replicating a Software Update Policy down a hierarchy, the update is not ready for distribution on the Child as the associated bulletin(s) are not Enabled. Not all updates within the bulletin have been staged.
Closer inspection of the corresponding policies on the Parent show that some Software Update Advertisements have been removed from the policies.
In the server logs on the Parent, at the start of the replication process, there will be trace level messages with the description:
“Show me this error message on Advert <Advertisement Name>”
Priority: 8 Tick Count: 21335468 Host Name: Server Process: AeXSvc (2628) Thread ID: 70 Module: AeXSVC.exe Source: Altiris.PatchManagementCore.Policies.SoftwareUpdateAdvertismentSetPolicy.OnSave Description: Show me this error message on Advert WindowsServer2003-KB956802-x86-DEU.exe for MS08-071
These messages will occur for each advertisement that has been removed.
The removal of the advertisements is due to a caching issue when the Software Update Policies are replicated. Software Update Policies are not replicable by default. This is so they can only be replicated by the corresponding Patch replication rule - the ‘Patch Management Software Distribution Replication For Microsoft’ replication rule. When that rule runs, any policies selected for replication are set to be replicable so that they can be sent down the hierarchy. They are then set back to be non-replicable when the rule has completed its run. It is during this process that the issue occurs.
If the issue occurs, the Software Update Policies must be fixed on the Parent and re-replicated. They cannot be fixed on the Child as they are owned by the Parent server and controlled from that server. Do not run Revise Software Updates on the Child NS as this can result in duplicate Software Update Advertisements being created. Revise Software Updates can be run on the Parent server which should add the missing advertisements back into the Software Update Policy.
To avoid the issue, it is recommended that the 'Patch Management Software Distribution Replication For Microsoft' replication rule be run on the Standard Replication Schedules (so to one Child server at a time) rather than a Custom Schedule (to all Child servers at once) as the problem is less likely to occur when they are being replicated to one Child server at a time.
Expand the Advanced section, select the 'Patch Management Software Distribution Replication For Microsoft' rule and click on the 'Edit' toolbar icon. This will open the configuration page for the rule where schedules and other settings can be configured.
As this is a caching issue, restarting the Altiris Service and Object Host Service on the Parent before a policy is replicated should also avoid the issue occurring. The cache should also be refreshed after 15 minutes.
