When attempting to install NS 6 on a server that is running Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager (SEPM), the install fails and the following error is found in the NS logs:
Module: AltirisNativeHelper.dll Source: Altiris.NS.AeXConfig.Main Description: ( Unhandled exception. Type=System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException Msg=The system cannot find the path specified Src=System.DirectoryServices StackTrace= at System.DirectoryServices.DirectoryEntry.Bind(Boolean throwIfFail) at System.DirectoryServices.DirectoryEntry.Bind() at System.DirectoryServices.DirectoryEntry.RefreshCache() at Altiris.NS.Server.get_BaseAltirisUrl() at Altiris.NS.Server.get_BaseUrl() at Altiris.NS.AeXConfig.Main(String args) COM Exception errcode = -2147024893 )
Just seconds prior to this error, the System Event logs record the following two errors in sequence:
The IIS Admin Service service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 1 time(s).
The World Wide Web Publishing Service service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 1 time(s).
There appears to be a race condition between the installer service and IIS Manager that is caused by having the Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager service (which depends on the World Wide Web Publishing service), restart itself after every IIS restart.
To workaround this issue, use the following steps:
Stop AND disable the Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager service
Install Notification Server
Using regedit.exe, browse to HKLM\Software\Altiris\eXpress\NotificationServer\RPCEndpoint
The default value of RPCEndpoint is 9090 which conflicts with SEPM
Change this value to 9091
Set the Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager service Startup Type back to Automatic
Restart the Altiris Service
Start the Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager service
These same steps will likely need to be done any time a new solution is added to the Notification Server.
Notification Server 6.0 SP3
Notification Server 7.0
Symantec Endpoint Protection 11.x
