During the initial installation or upgrade of products/Solutions, Symantec Installation Manager (SIM) fails during the stop or restart of services.
If you try to restart the service manually (in this case the service failing was the Altiris Service), you get a message saying:
Could not start the Altiris Service service on Local Computer. Error 1053: The serice did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion.
Then the Altiris Service stays in 'starting' mode and never starts the all (until you reboot the machine or run NET STOP 'service name')
This issue has been reported to Symantec Development Team. The issue has been identified and addressed. Waiting to be included in a future release.
In some cases, one of our customers changed the AppID from Local Admin Account to a Domain Admin Accont. After that, the customer was able to keep the services running, starting and stopping properly. In another case restarting the SQL Server service helped to get the Altiris Service service to start.
