Issue/Introduction

When you delete one or more items from the local quarantine you receive the error message, “Unknown error – 80004005.”

Cause

There are corrupted items in the local quarantine.

Resolution

To solve this problem perform the following tasks in this order:

  1. Remove all the items from the local quarantine.
  2. Restart the Symantec Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange (SMSMSE) service.
  3. Identify the corrupted item(s).

To remove all the files from the local quarantine

  1. Navigate to the local quarantine folder. The default location is:

    C:\Program Files\Symantec\SMSMSE\<version>\Server\Quarantine (64 bit) or C:\Program Files (x86)\Symantec\SMSMSE\<version>\Server\Quarantine (32 bit)
  2. Create a new folder called "OldQuarantine".
  3. Move all of the items to the new folder.

To restart the Symantec Mail Security Service for Microsoft Exchange service

  1. Click Start > Run.
  2. In the Run dialog box type:

    services.msc
  3. Click Enter.
  4. In the Services window, right-click Symantec Mail Security for Microsoft Exchange.
  5. Click Restart.

To identify the corrupted items

  1. After restarting the SMSMSE service, verify that the local quarantine is empty.
  2. Move one or more items from the OldQuarantine folder to the original local quarantine folder.
  3. Restart the SMSMSE service.
  4. Open SMSMSE.
  5. Click Monitors > Quarantine.
  6. Try to delete one of the items.
    • If you can delete an item, than the files currently in the local quarantine are not corrupted.  Repeat steps 2-6 with one or more additional items.
    • If you cannot delete an item, one of the items you just moved to the local quarantine is corrupted.  Move these items back to OldQuarantine and repeat steps 2-6 for each item individually.  The item that causes the error is corrupted.
