Issue/Introduction

The Symantec Endpoint Protection Support Tool reports that the Distributed Component Object Model (DCOM) is not enabled.

Cause

DCOM is a set of drivers that allows software communications over networks. The Symantec Endpoint Protection installation requires DCOM to be enabled and running in order to succeed.

Resolution

To ensure that DCOM is enabled, you must check in both the Windows Registry and within the DCOM configuration utility, Dcomcnfg.exe.

To ensure that DCOM is enabled in the Windows registry
  1. Click Start > Run, type regedit, and click OK.
  2. In the Registry Editor, go to:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\OLE
  3. Examine the string value EnableDCOM. If the string value is set to N, double-click it and change it to Y.
  4. If you made a change in step 3, restart the computer.

To ensure that DCOM is enabled in Dcomcnfg.exe on Windows XP or Windows Server 2003
  1. Click Start > Run, type Dcomcnfg.exe, and click OK.
  2. Under Console Root, click Component Services > Computers.
  3. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
  4. Type the computer name.
  5. Right-click the computer name, and then click Properties.
  6. On the Default Properties tab, check Enable Distributed COM on this Computer.
  7. Click OK to apply the changes and quit Dcomcnfg.exe.
  8. Restart the computer for the changes to take effect.
